About The Artist

ARTIST STATEMENT

Noe makes everything by hand using simple tools. She’s known for playful sculptural works that take the form of ancient Japanese figurines. Her pieces mix child-like simplicity with contemporary sophistication, and incorporate her background in Fine Art and design with her cultural heritage. She shares the traditional Japanese view that spirits are everywhere, especially in nature – for Noe, the truth of our universe can be found in the wilderness. Her series, ‘Haniwa,’ invites the spirit of nature into people’s homes in the simplest forms possible. Haniwa were ancient clay figures buried with the dead during the Kofun period of Japan. The belief was that the Haniwa would protect souls in the afterlife. The artist reinterprets this idea to create figurative sculptures that can protect our souls in this world, while we are living, in the hope that we can live as truthfully as we can.
